Are you an experienced investment analyst/investor/genius?
Are you based in Melbourne, Australia, and looking for a new challenge?
We’re seeking expressions of interest from talented, funny and motivated investment/finance professionals who would like to join the Rask family in the role of Senior Investment Analyst.
About Rask
The Rask Group started in Melbourne as a financial education service. Today, our websites and associated services attract tens of thousands of Aussies every week. Our brands include:
- Rask Finance – free education
- Rask Media – free sharemarket investment news & analysis
- Rask Invest – premium ASX & global share investment research
- BestETFs Australia – a growing portal for ETF & managed fund research
- Podcasts, events and loads more
In terms of accomplishments, we were voted the best up-and-coming financial services company on earth*.
The Role
We’re seeking expressions of interest from experienced investors who share our values of long-term investing, lifelong learning and who want to be part of something that makes a difference. We’re looking for people who understand our business and want to ‘buy-in’.
Rask is a finance business, but we’re different from just about everyone else. We think of our team members as partners, not ’employees’. That’s great for culture and the work environment but it also means the successful candidate for this role may be responsible for a variety of tasks and must be prepared to go above and beyond their job title. Common tasks (in order of estimated time committed) include:
- Investment research and analysis, including organising company meetings, due diligence, valuation and modeling
- Presentation of in-depth analysis to the compact Rask investment team
- Presentation of analysis in written, audio and video format to our paying members and to the public (i.e. you would be comfortable with having or building a significant public but personal brand and track record)
- Engaging with our paying Rask Invest members and other investment professionals on a near-daily basis via our forums
- Active participation in our business strategy meetings and in execution (including marketing, events, etc.)
- Appearing in the media for expert guest interviews, or presenting at public events
- Producing written articles, podcasts and audio content for Rask Media, Best ETFs and Rask Finance
- Mastery of investment, marketing or internal projects as required by the business
- Traveling for research, business operations or marketing initiatives
The successful applicant will work directly with me (Owen), the Founder of The Rask Group and lead investment adviser of Rask Invest. In time, it is likely there will be potential to play a lead role in the investment research and advice we produce.
Essentials
- Humility and curiosity — we’d take passion over pedigree any day of the week
- Integrity and a passion for well-researched, ethical investment advice
- Three (or more) of the following:
- 150 IQ — or greater
- Photographic memory
- Brain control
- All of the above
- A degree in one or more of commerce, technology/engineering, finance, business, journalism and/or accounting
- Postgraduate studies and/or partial CFA Program completion
- Investment experience (more = better)
- Excellent communication skills (written, audio, visual)
- The right to work in Australia (Hawthorn, Melbourne — to be more precise)
Extras
Chances are, the successful applicant will tick two or more of the following:
- 3-5+ years’ investment experience (some professional and personal experience is a massive advantage — crypto doesn’t count)
- Post-graduate (MAppFin, MBA, MCom, Ph.D., etc.), CFA Program, CA or CPA completion (this demonstrates your commitment to learning)
- Public track record with blogging/producing investment research and analysis (this demonstrates your passion for investing/finance/your career — and your marketing skills)
- Programming experience with Google Sheets/Excel, and/or other types of code (WordPress, PHP, Javascript, other languages, etc.)
- Professional investment research and report writing (e.g. reports, formal emails, etc.)
- Advanced financial modeling skills (financial statements are the language of investing; and extra quantitative studies would be looked upon favourably). For example, we expect you’ll know how to create simple but concise DCFs in Google Sheets and understand most other techniques like IRR, SOTP, PMV, etc.
Very Important Points…
There are a few very important points to consider before you submit your resume and cover letter…
We’re a business still in start-up mode. While it sounds glamorous (yes, we have beanbags) and it can be extremely rewarding (yes, equity is up for grabs), you should be realistic — a very fast-paced work environment doesn’t suit everyone. You’ll need to be a team player, learn quickly and occasionally deal with tight deadlines which brings stress and complex projects you won’t have the answer to right away.
Second, chances are, if you’re as good as we think you are, you’ll be underpaid for your talent. We don’t have the ability to offer investment bank bonuses or lucrative wages like a Big Four accounting firm. However, what we lack in cash remuneration we make up for in many other ways, including work-life balance, lifestyle and a genuine love for what you do each day — the choice is yours: you can skip or tapdance to work.
Finally, again, Rask is an early-stage business with a growing track record for delivering great general investment and financial advice to Aussies and Kiwis. In joining Rask, it’s all-aboard on our mission to help people use their money better. To do that, we’re constantly iterating our ways of doing business, educating ourselves and strive to serve our members in new and exciting ways. That means you’ll need to be open to learning some new tricks along the way.
What’s In It For You?
This is an excellent role for someone who’s extremely passionate about investing in great companies for the long run. For someone who’s prepared to work in a growing business, and for someone who wants to learn massive amounts about investing, research, business, marketing, technology, content production and more.
The successful candidate can expect:
- A very relaxed daily work routine and autonomy (absolutely no micromanagement)
- Flexible time and work arrangements (e.g. it wouldn’t be unusual to work from home one or two days per week)
- An established and growing platform to launch your personal brand
- A fixed-rate of pay, plus transparent performance-based bonuses
- Other small bonuses and perks (tech and study bonuses, etc.)
- 10% Super
- An opportunity to go deep and learn about businesses each and every day
- Equal input into the investment process, Rask business strategy and marketing
- Free Starbursts and instant coffee (Nescafe^)
I strongly encourage experienced bloggers, private, professional investors and career changers (e.g. accounting, marketing, construction, engineering, etc.) — who have an interest in joining a laid-back, flexible and growth-focused team — to apply.
Next Steps…
If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please email your resume and a customised 200-word ‘about me’ bio (aka cover letter) to the email address: editor[at]raskmedia.com.au (obviously, replace ‘at’ with @).
Please use “Help! I’m A Day Trader” in the subject line (or simply “senior analyst” for the less adventurous).
Important: In your cover letter, we would appreciate it if you can write your desired/required all-in salary/remuneration range. This will help me understand what you would require to join the Rask team for the long haul.
Finally, this is an open-ended expression of interest. We will do our best to reply to all applicants because we appreciate the time it takes to apply. However, due to the extremely high volumes of resumes and cover letters we’re expecting to receive, we may not be able to reply or acknowledge everyone’s efforts in applying. Therefore, thank you in advance.
