Team Rask Australia is pleased to dangle a carrot in front of aspiring, established or expert-level analysts.
- We’re seeking expressions of interest from only the most talented, ethical and energetic investment analysts who would consider joining our team at Rask Australia.
- Our analysts contribute to so much more than research, so if you don’t like getting your hands dirty on operations, member/customer service, marketing, working in a team, technology, appearing on podcasts, videos or TV, please don’t stress — there’s no need to express your interest.
- We’re looking for positive go-getters who want to research and find fantastic companies and capital allocators, make a name for themselves and help our team develop new ways of thinking, and motivate us to strive for more.
- People who use their left and right brain, doing their best work at the intersection of mechanics and creativity would be suited to working at Rask Australia. We’re looking for passionate investors, not scientists*
*unless you are a passionate investor who doubles as a scientist, in which case please keep reading, Professor.
About Rask Australia:
Blank.
As a gun analyst, you can work this out. We would expect you to already be intimately familiar with our brands and purpose before you send us an email.
Our culture
Rask’s mission is to empower Australians and Kiwis to invest well by learning how the world works. We empower people to achieve mastery of their own finances. We do this by giving them the right information and insights.
Everything we do is to improve outcomes for our members, readers, listeners, students and viewers. From someone reading a news article or a student of our free courses right through to our highest-tier of premium Rask members. Our returns aren’t measured by our investment performance but by the emails we receive (almost daily now) from the tens of thousands of people in our audience who appreciate what we have done for them.
Our culture is built upon integrity, transparency, honesty and accountability to every stakeholder.
The potential position(s)
Our team is small. Tight-knit. Easy-going. Focused.
While we’re not the biggest B-Ball fans, we do have an ambitious plan to create the Dream Team of Australian finance, so over the next 12 months it’s likely we’ll be seeking players to join our team in a variety of investment, technology and/or marketing roles.
Any analyst in our team will have a deep focus on their specific function or field (i.e. he or she will have or want to achieve mastery of something they’re passionate about, such as small caps, US tech, ETFs, managed fund research, etc.). However, everyone in our team must also contribute to the business and spearhead projects outside of investment research.
Some of the known specialist areas of interest for us are:
- ASX share research, particularly technology/software, industrials and health tech small and mid-caps (e.g. you could do a good DCF on a handkerchief and explain it to a beginner if you really wanted to)
- US and global technology share research (e.g. the only thing you love more than a 10k and proxy statement is unravelling anti-trust legislation and simultaneously decrypting a Trump tweet)
- Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) and managed fund research (e.g. you would be at ease talking to a fund manager or ETF provider about investment process and critical appraising their risk management framework)
- Software development for the financial web (cloud tech, machine learning, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Google Scripts, PHP, Python, database systems… the list goes on and on). You would be keen to learn more about how these tools play a role in our investing and content production.
Of course, simply knowing things is not enough.
In a team environment where sharing information and knowledge with tens of thousands of readers and listeners is our model, a very high level of written and verbal communication skills are essential. For example, your writing could make people laugh or cry (or both, at the same time) and your verbal articulation of complex ideas would encourage people to rewind a podcast just to write down what you said so eloquently.
Please note: our positions are required to be based out of our Melbourne office, but we work remote 2-3 days of the week.
If you believe you have deep domain knowledge and you want a platform for sharing it, we want to hear from you. So, please, keep reading…
Requirements:
- To become part of the Rask Dream Team, you will want to tick as many of these boxes as you can. You are…
- At least 7-foot tall (just kidding, 6’8” would work)
- A lifelong learner (i.e. you read, watch and listen daily)
- Comfortable being an active part of a team, and might even be ok with leading said team (in time)
- Comfortable working from home — and being hyper-productive (even if you’re in ugg boots and Kmart trackies)
Comfortable working or getting on the road (e.g. for events, media appearances, etc.)
Happy to make a proper fool of yourself, but do it with integrity and humility
Yearning to surround yourself with healthy, upbeat and intelligent people
Looking for more than a job — i.e. you want to help change the way things are done
In practice, you might have…
- An undergraduate degree in engineering, finance/commerce, accounting, computer science, marketing or other. We really don’t mind what course and qualification you thought you might need when you were 17 and had no idea what you wanted to do.
- Nice to have: a postgraduate degree in technology, engineering, teaching, finance, mathematics, creative writing, astronomy, accounting, etc.
- Considered, started or finished the CFA, CAIA, CIMA, CFP, CPA or CA programs
- Have at least a few years of personal or professional investing experience, ideally which involved conveying complex messages or hypotheses about investment strategy, companies, business models or similar (note: a blog or publicly available repository of your well-crafted ideas would be wonderful)
- Experience with coding, databases, WordPress and Google cloud-technologies is an advantage
What do you get?
In exchange for your brilliance, time and energy you will get the platform to be who you are, develop your skills, learn new things, take control of projects and do what you’ve always wanted to do.
We will embrace (with open arms) flexible working arrangements for the right person(s) wherever we can:
- Got kids and need to work triple shifts (i.e. 6 am – 7 am, 9:30 am – 3 pm, 7 pm – 9:30 pm)? That’s brave. Let’s chat.
- Like to do a yoga session during the day? Sure.
- Need to escape by coming into the office three days per week? Done.
We offer competitive but probably below-average wages, with 10% Super, a technology bonus, equity earn-ins and more. The exact salary and equity is subject to the skills and experience the candidate(s) will have.
Keep in mind our business is a start-up and our team is young-ish and energetic. So you would need to be comfortable with a ‘move fast and (try not to) break things’ approach.
Next steps
We’re seeking expressions of interest from talented and aligned finance nerds like us. Chances are you already follow us closely and like what we do.
To set expectations, we are calling this an ‘expression of interest’ because we don’t yet have a hard deadline for hiring new team members. However, we’re prepping for expansion sometime in the back half of 2020. So, if you are even vaguely interested in what we might have to offer you — we want to hear from you.
Send us an email telling us about yourself, your fit with Rask’s mission and brand and how your experience will help Aussies and Kiwis invest better. Basically, a short cover letter (there’s no need for a resume right now). Also, if you have a link to your best work(s), blog posts or whatever it is that tells us more about your work and philosophy — please include that. In your short email, please feel free to tell us about what you’re looking for (salary expectations, work-life balance, full-time versus part-time versus contractor, etc.).
DEADLINE: none.
When you shoot us your expression of interest using the subject line “Rask Dream Team”, we’ll try to acknowledge it within 30 days but please note we may be unable to reply to everyone. Indeed, we’ll do our best to get back to you but if you do take the time to consider our team, I want to thank you in advance for expressing your interest in helping us on our mission to empower more people.
Cheers,
Owen
P.S. what’s the definition of a long-term investment?
