On The Australian Investors Podcast ‘2 Sense‘ this week, your host and analyst Owen Rask is back with financial planner Drew Meredith, CFP (also called “Andrew Deremith, ESQ”, depending on the weather) to answer your investing questions, provide their market update and — of course — make you laugh.
This week, Drew and Owen talk about:
- The rise of FANG stocks
- Drew’s late 2022 call to buy the Global X FANG+ ETF (ASX: FANG) (he reckons it could be his best ever!)
- Why we don’t talk much about small-cap ETFs
- What to invest in for a newborn child
- Retirement planning with a defined benefit plan, and
- The 5 stock indicators we would use to screen for companies.
The Australian Investors Podcast, Australia’s best investing podcast for professionals and private investors, is back for “2 sense”, hosted by investment analyst Owen Rask and financial planner Drew Meredith, CFP (AKA Andrew Deremith). Join 51,000 investors who listen regularly.
This week’s winner of our ‘best questioner name’ is ‘Bro. No go with VSO?’, who asked why we don’t talk about small-cap index ETFs.
Here are some of the investing questions we attempted to cover
Bro. No go with VSO? 🏆 | Lads. Can you please bro down on VSO? what are the pros and cons? Would it fit in your core portfolio? Is there any point? WWADD (What would Andrew Deremyth do)? I’m a year into investing, have VAS and VGS for myself, and IVV for my kids. I do plan to start investing in individual companies once ive won and completed your course Owen. Keep up the banter |
Gilbert Marriner | Where can you find list of names, who will receive money |
Mike … | Love the podcast! I have a question about defined benefit super mixed with a cash account. Does having a defined benefit allow one to expose themselves to greater risk when investing their cash account money? |
Coupla Finnies skolling tinnies | We all wish we started investing earlier. Well, I’d love to gift my new born nephew some ETF position.
What would be the best way to do this? Any relevant considerations or tax implications? |
FANGing It | Hey broskis/finnies, thanks for answering my Elders question on the poddy last week!
Question this week – I managed to buy a bit of FANG etf over the past 5 months and am feeling like an accidental hero (assuming Andrew/Drew is feeling pretty happy with his timing too!) Given $1AUD buys 65c USD at time of writing, we’re at the lower end of the long term average… My question is how much (if any) impact does currency movement have on the FANG etf share price? Noting the aussie dollar fallen from 73c to 65c since the start of the year whilst at the same time many of the fang stocks have had stellar share price runs… So is the FANG price all a result of the individual stock movements, or has currency movement played a role as well? And in addition, should we be keeping currency movement somewhat in mind when buying US-stock-dominated ETFs currently? Really enjoying the pod, keep up the great work! |
Charlie Hunger … | “How much is enough for retirement? This question has been on my mind lately, particularly in terms of achieving financial stability. Assuming one has already paid off their mortgage and cleared any outstanding debts, what else needs to be considered when taking the leap. For instance, let’s consider a 5% gross return on a portfolio worth 1.5 million outside of superannuation. This would yield an annual income of 75,000 dollars. By living off the dividends while allowing the remaining amount to compound (with an average return of 3% after subtracting dividends), as long as lifestyle can be maintained what other variables are required to think about. |
Indie Beau Tom | Looking at using chatGPT to help me build a stock screener. What would your top 5 indicators be to help screen? |
Art Vanderlay | Hey Owen & Drew
Sitting on a decent cash balance in the portfolio atm. Selfwealth don’t pay interest. Any thoughts on what would be a good option to get this cash to do some work? External high interest account? Some type of ETF? (AAA) Thanks |
