Team Rask is pleased to dangle a carrot in front of Australia’s smart investors and analysts 🥕
- We’re seeking expressions of interest from talented, ethical and energetic investment analysts who would consider joining us at Rask team to work on our most exciting project ever.
- As a purpose-driven company with national reach, our analysts contribute to more than just research. If you’re happy to (occasionally) get your hands dirty with education, marketing, working in a team, appearing on podcasts, videos or TV. Submit an application (see below).
- If you’ve only ever wanted to do one thing, please don’t stress — there’s no need to express your interest.
- We’re looking for growth-focused professionals who want to research and write up in-depth reports on Australia’s best-managed funds and fund managers, ETFs and companies, working directly with me (Owen) to create portfolios.
- If you want flexibility but focus, and an environment with unlimited potential, this is it.
- We want investors who use their left and right brain. If you do your best work at the intersection of mechanics and creativity, chances are, you would be suited to working at Rask.
- This is a senior multi-sector investment analyst role.
About Rask:
Blank.
As a gun analyst, we’re sure you’ll be able to work this one out. If not, we would expect you to already be intimately familiar with our brands and purpose before you submit your application.
Our culture
Rask’s mission is to empower Australians and Kiwis to invest well by learning how the world works. We empower people to achieve mastery of their own finances and investing.
Everything we do is to improve outcomes for our investors, members, readers, listeners, students and viewers. From someone reading a news article here on Rask Media or a student in our free investing courses, right through to our highest-tier of premium Rask clients.
Our returns aren’t measured simply by our investment performance but by the impact we have on our 200,000+ community every month.
Our culture is built upon integrity, transparency, honesty and accountability to every stakeholder.
The potential position(s)
You will be working directly with our Chief Investment Officer, Owen Rask. Sorry in advance…
You will be a Senior Investment Analyst, with a minimum of 5+ years of experience, and be required to work across multiple asset classes and product styles (ETFs, managed funds, direct shares, LICs, etc.). The predominant focus (at first) will be low-cost listed products like ETFs, actively managed listed funds, LICs and ASX shares, in that order.
Working directly with me (sorry again) you will be required to research all types of opportunities, following our established investment philosophy and investment process. At first, new opportunities may be given to you but eventually, you will choose your targets.
We follow an investment process that is a extremely detailed qualitative and quantitative approach. It is proprietary and has been built using 10+ years of research experience and (probably) thousands of hours of interviewing.
Following your research, you will then translate the complicated parts of the opportunity into simple terms, for our experienced direct investor base. You will do this via research reports, quarterly investor webinars, monthly updates, stock notes, podcasts, television… whatever!
Please note: we don’t expect a PhD in any area of finance. We hire passion over pedigree. But you must have an insatiable appetite for learning about capital markets — equities, debt, equity-like debt, listed or unlisted, private and public.
(If you’re in doubt, ask yourself: if you and I were sitting in a restaurant right now, would you be thinking about what’s in your favourite IPA, or trying to figure out how to value the restaurant?)
As this is a Senior role, there are some minimum requirements. See below.
Where is this magical place?
Our positions are distributed and flexible. “Our people are everywhere!”
Chances are, you’ll mostly work remotely. Meaning, the role will suit parents…
… or folks who dream of sharing a 50-acre block with 10,000 blowflies. Rather than running Australia’s most active Asian Fusion Yelp! account.
Yelp!
Regardless, you may be required to travel interstate or even overseas, from time to time. And we would require you to travel to our Melbourne office at least once per quarter.
(Don’t worry, Yelpers, our office is above Melbourne’s #1 Asian fusion joint.)
Basically, if you believe you have deep domain knowledge, want a platform for sharing it and think you can help 200,000 Aussies invest better, we want to hear from you!
No matter which part of Australia you call home.
Must haves
To become part of the Rask analyst team, you will want to tick as many of these boxes as you can. You are…
- At least 7 feet tall (just kidding, 6’8” would work)
- A lifelong learner (i.e. you read, watch and listen daily)
- Comfortable being an active part of a team, and could see yourself as a leader (in time)
- Comfortable working from home — and being hyper-productive (even if you’re in Ugg boots and Kmart trackies)
- Comfortable working or getting on the road (e.g. for events, media appearances, etc.)
- Happy to make a proper fool of yourself, but do it with integrity and humility
- Yearn to surround yourself with healthy, upbeat and intelligent people
- Looking for more than a job — i.e. you want to help change the way things are done
In practice, you will have…
- An undergraduate degree in liberal arts, engineering, finance/commerce, accounting, computer science, marketing or other. We really don’t mind what course and qualification you thought you might need when you were 17 but…
- You will also have started (or completed) one or more of MBA, CFA, related PhD, CA, MAppFin, MFinPlan, Engineering, LLM or JD. This proves to us that your passion for investing extends beyond the latest Joe Rogan podcast.
- 5+ years of investment industry experience (e.g. at a consulting firm, analyst role, resource house, financial planning research, etc.)
- 5+ years of personal investing experience
- Multi-sector research experience (this is a requirement unless you can prove your passion for investment markets outside of equities)
Nice to haves
- Time machine
- Beautiful writing – I write to figure out what I’m thinking
- Writing experience – blogs, amazing Twitter threads, novels, whatever!
- Liberal arts or psychology background
What do you get?
In exchange for your brilliance, time and energy you will get the platform to be who you are, develop your skills, learn new things, take control of projects and do what you’ve always wanted to do.
We will embrace (with open arms) flexible working arrangements for the right person(s) wherever we can.
- Got kids and need to work triple shifts (i.e. 6 am – 7 am, 9:30 am – 3 pm, 7 pm – 9:30 pm)? That’s brave. Let’s chat.
- Like to do a yoga session during the day? Sure. Whatever floats your goat.
- Need to escape the office by coming to work? Sure.
We offer competitive but probably below-average wages, with 10% Super, a technology bonus, equity earn-ins, unlimited leave, flexibility, and more.
The exact salary and equity is subject to the skills and experience the candidate(s) will have. You will have a chance to nominate your minimum salary in the Google Form (below).
Keep in mind our business is a start-up and we are definitely not VC-backed.
Next steps
We’re seeking expressions of interest from talented and aligned investors like us to work on the biggest and most exciting project in Rask’s history.
Chances are, you already follow us closely and like what we do. So if you’re an investor with big aspirations, this is the role for you. You will genuinely be able to help people all across the country and grow while you do it.
How to apply –
You can apply by filling in this Google Form. You will be asked three hard questions, including:
- Is 60-40 dead? (200 words)
- Take a hypothetical 3-year view on Australian interest rates. Higher, same, lower. Then tell us how you would tweak a 60-40 portfolio? (200 words)
- What’s the greatest business you’ve ever seen and why? (unlimited words)
We highly encourage you to submit your application before July 31st because we are prepared to move quickly on the right applicant.Â
Cheers,
Owen
