What are ETFs?
Exchange traded funds (ETFs) are a low-cost way to earn a return similar to an index or a commodity. They can also help to diversify your investments. You can buy and sell units in ETFs through a stockbroker, the same way you buy and sell shares.
Example for the ASX200: Instead of having to pick from shares like Telstra, Coles and BHP, buying an ETF that tracks the ASX 200, like A200 or IOZ, gives you instant diversification across the top 200 largest Australian listed companies.
