Selling & buying things second-hand

From a listener: Can Kate share her experience using gumtree or marketplace to sell items. worry too much about the increasing number of scams, is there a process she goes through to ensure buyers are genuine?

Kate’s tips for using Gumtree

  • A close family member was scammed when they sold a laptop online through Marketplace, and the buyer sent through an edited PayPal receipt – advising money would arrive in 1-2 days, she posted the laptop to a parcel locker, money never turned up, reported but nothing could be done
  • Cash or PayID on the spot when selling items in person, day time, sometimes I ask my housemate to come outside, never give your flat number
  • Clear, simple description and image
  • Address given on the day they’re coming to pick up
  • People will ghost sadly, takes a little bit of time
